What an interesting day for Tony and I as we rode from his place to my place and then back again over several hours! Basically, my place is uphill from Parramatta, while Tony's is more cross-country (with some hills along the way). We decided that, for the sake of "time in the saddle", we'd do the hard bit first. I drove over to Tony's place and then we rode back to mine, had a break (with some nice Oolong tea) and then rode to his place. The picture of "The Bros" was taken at the halfway point, after a rest.
It's taken me until I'm nearly 53, but I found out today what it is to get a "second wind". I just managed to get up the hill leading towards Pendle Hill station, but heading along the railway line from Pendle Hill to Toongabbie, I began to feel great and powered alon for the last couple of kilometres of the ride. By the time Tony and I got to his place, I think we were both ready to go again! We thought better of it tho' :-)

Gday everyone.
Looking forward to the ride. I almost fell off my chair when I read Katie's email about a dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant in Surry Hills on Friday 23rd Feb, because that is exactly what I've just booked in for my main fund-raiser. I've booked upstairs for 50 people at $80 a head at Non La, 59 Fitzroy St, Surry Hills starting 7pm. I've lined up my sister to come and speak (she works at the Northcott Society in Tamworth) and am trying to get a Northcott client along as well.
My suggestion is that I go ahead with these arrangements, but see if there's room downstairs for the cyclists dinner. I visited 4 restaurants in the area and found this one the best value (they're charging me $35 a head for an 8 course banquet including corkage). If you order a la carte, the mains are $16 to $19, or $12 for vegetarian, and the setting's really nice (a couple of the others had good reviews for the food but more like plastic tables and no frills decor). Also, if you thought this a good idea, Ruth (and potentially the Northcott client) would be more than happy to give a talk to the cyclists as well (and the Northcott Society might be interested in getting some publicity mileage out of the evening). And maybe you guys could troop upstairs and give a quick briefing on the cycling.
Aside from this dinner I haven't done much yet on the fund-raising, but I've got some regular sponsors from past ventures (like the Arrow Foundation's Hawkesbury Canoe Classic, or the Oxfam trailwalk) so I'm not too worried.
I'm pretty fit at the moment from rowing - and I've just returned from 2 weeks holiday where I fitted in a few good rides.
Good on you for setting up the websites - I'm envious. I've attached a photo you're welcome to use - of one of my other hobbies - bagpiping - which you probably won't get a chance to see as the pipes are rather too cumbersome to pack for a cycling holiday.
Good luck with your preparations, and see you all soon.
Don
